Keep it Going! Top 5 car maintenance items

We spoke with Danny Green from Green’s Automotive in Rowlett, Texas to get his expert opinion on what the top 5 car maintenance items are.

Danny let us know that maintenance is extremely important. Most important is checking the oil. He told us that not changing your oil is the quickest way to kill your car. Most cars have dipsticks to check your oil levels.

If your car has a dipstick, you will check the oil with the car not running, and the dipstick at a level position. First pull the dipstick out, wipe it off with a rag, place it back into the socket, pull it out a second time, and check the level you see oil at.

You change your oil on the interval set by the manufacturer and based on the make of your car. There are two different types of oil. Synthetic and Conventional are the two types of oil. If using conventional, you should change it every 3000 miles. If your car runs on synthetic oil, it should be changed every 6000 miles.

Transmission fluid needs to be checked, if you have a dipstick for it.

Power steering fluid should also be checked if you have a dipstick for it.

Coolant should be checked via two different parts. The overflow reservoir and main radiator. You should never check the level of antifreeze in the main radiator while the car is hot. You should only check it when it’s cool. Always make sure there is fluid in the overflow reservoir, and that your main radiator is full.

Coolant: Main Radiator
Coolant: Overflow Reservoir

Your battery should not be crusty or have residue on the top. The terminals should be clean, as well as tight.

Make sure the air filters both inside of the car, and under the hood / where the engine is located should always be functioning and well serviced.

Danny suggested checking these top five items, (your oil, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, coolant levels, and battery) weekly or once every two weeks, and that you have a reliable mechanic to help you check it.

According to Danny, if you take care of your car, it’ll take care of you.
