Use by vs Sell by vs Best by

An expired date on your food container(s) doesn’t automatically mean you have to throw it away.

It’s important to look at the words near or around the date on the container.

Regardless of the date on the container, throw the item away, if the food starts to smell bad or looks discolored.

Use by: Be careful consuming a product past this date.

Best by: Date when the item will taste the best.

Sell by: You shouldn’t buy anything with a Sell by date that has expired. This gives you less time to enjoy the item.

The Food Safety and Inspection Service department of the US Department of Agriculture has provided an in depth explanation of food dating and proper handling of food. You can go to www.fsis.usda.gov for more information.
